ABOUT SCOPE FOUNDATION

SCOPE is a science-focused conservation organisation in Bangladesh, formally established in 2017. Its founders have worked on wildlife science and migratory birds since 2010. SCOPE conserves species and habitats through science-based, sustainable solutions that balance ecological integrity with human needs, working alongside the communities living closest to nature.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Pallas’s Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus leucoryphus) is a globally Endangered raptor, and north-east Bangladesh is a stronghold for its breeding population. SCOPE combines nest monitoring, habitat assessment and community-based protection, including nest guardian schemes and chick rehabilitation, to reduce threats such as nest-tree felling, storm-related chick loss and wetland degradation. The team may also help rescue and rehabilitate other raptors in northeast Bangladesh, such as migratory vultures.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Working with local communities is a key part of this role. The Field Manager will build trust with fishers, farmers, nest-tree owners and nest guardians in the haor villages, and will lead the day-to-day field activities for the project: monitoring nests using new technology, finding new nests, collecting data, rehabilitation and supporting the local field team. The role is based in Sunamganj, but if required the Field Manager may be asked to join fieldwork at other locations outside Sunamganj. SCOPE will arrange and cover the costs of such travel.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage and coordinate field research and conservation activities
  • Supervise and support the local field team
  • Monitor known nests regularly, recording nest status, breeding activity and habitat condition
  • Survey wetlands, rivers and haor areas, including interviews with fishers, farmers and other local people, to find new nests
  • Record nest-site characteristics and threats such as nest-tree felling, nest removal, disturbance, power lines, storm damage, and wetland loss
  • Support nest guardians, landowners and nest-tree owners, and help respond when chicks fall from nests, following project guidance. Coordination of possible rehabilitation work on Pallas’s Fish Eagle and migratory vultures in other parts of northeast Bangladesh
  • Build good relationships with local communities and support outreach activities
  • Keep accurate field data, photos and GPS records
  • Submit regular field reports and keep the Project Coordinator updated
  • Plan field schedules and logistics, and look after project equipment
  • Follow field safety and ethical guidelines.
  • If required, take part in fieldwork outside Sunamganj, as directed by the Project Coordinator.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any subject
  • From, or based in, Sunamganj or a nearby district, with good knowledge of the area (preferred)
  • Fluency in Bangla
  • Good communication skills, especially with local communities and field teams
  • Basic computer and smartphone skills, including MS Word, Excel and Google Maps
  • Ability to work independently and manage several activities at once
  • Willingness to work in wetlands and remote areas, travel when required and work in challenging conditions, including by boat

Advantageous (not required): knowledge of the local Sylheti dialect, swimming and motorbike riding, wildlife or conservation experience, bird identification, GPS/GIS or mobile data-collection apps, and community interview experience. Training will be provided.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

  • Monthly salary: BDT 25,000.
  • Approved project-related field expenses and transport are covered by SCOPE.
